END OF PROJECT WORKSHOP AND REPORTS

A tourism workshop on May 20th, hosted by the Development Bank of Southern Africa and organized by the Tourism Business Council of South Africa, marked the end of the three year ‘Pro-Poor Tourism Pilots in Southern Africa’ project, May 2002 – May 2005.

The workshop was a great success, bringing together a wide range of different stakeholders from the public and private sectors to explore different ways in which companies have been developing linkages with local communities and small businesses and to share the lessons learned.

We have an overview report of the 3-year project available now while the finished report will be available in late June.

Some presentations from the workshop:

Case studies from our pilot sites:
Wilderness Safaris experience of developing local linkages - Malcolm McCulloch
Spier experience of developing local linkages - Tanner Methvin, Gareth Haysom

Background to PPT Pilots - Clive Poultney
Overview of lessons learned - Caroline Ashley

Overview of Tips and Tools for tourism companies on opportunities for local linkage
The Tools and Tips project is developing practical tools and tips for tourism companies on implementing local linkages and partnerships, and enhancing local impact. The aim is to assist those companies in South or Southern Africa that would like to do more, but could benefit from practical advice on how. More information on this project can be found at http://www.pptpilot.org.za/IFC_tooltips.htm
