A different
way of doing business (January 2005)
This paper argues that the tourism sector needs to go much further in shifting
from philanthropic approaches to community benefit to pro-poor approaches
that entail doing business differently. It goes beyond generalisations about
what companies should do to look at some of the nitty gritty of how they can
implement changed practice and illustrates that there is much that ‘mainstream’
commercial tourism can do to embrace pro-poor approaches.

PPT Pilots submission on tourism BEE scorecard (November
2004).
The proposed Tourism BEE scorecard aims to encourage broader black
economic empowerment in the sector. But the PPT team is concerned that in
practice, some of the indicators will discourage, rather than encourage, the
smallest enterprises and poorest operators.
Updates
on PPT Pilots (October 2004)
In this third and final year, much is happening at Pilot sites. The first
new local enterprises and suppliers are up and running, with previously unemployed

increasing their procurement of goods and services from local SMMEs, developing
new community-based product for their guests, and strengthening their partnerships
with neighbouring communities.
